Some old Minute Books, held by Derrick Lester, have yielded some fascinating information about the formation of our League. Although the Minutes shown here refer particularly to Cherry Grove, it is clear that a number of Clubs, or Teams, were in embryo round in the late 1920's, taking shape from the players who habitually played on their local greens.

It seems that prior to the actual formation of Clubs, competitions were held on many greens, and participants or their relatives would donate prizes. Interestingly, the name "Dawson" keeps cropping up through the various minutes.  And yes, it is Harold Dawson, Ron's father. I understand that Harold was one of the leading figures in the formation of the Cherry Grove Club, and subsequently the League itself.

Thus, the Dawson family, including Ron's son Tony, for a shortish time, were continuously involved in our League for well over 70 years. Some record.

If anyone can add significant and interesting information to this, please contact me via the web site. As part of the Archive, we show the Eldridge Cup winners since 1935. Any information on Jim Eldridge ? I'll keep looking through the minute book.

10th November 1927    - Cherry Grove Bowling Club was formed

A first set of informal fixtures was proposed and agreed for the 1930 season. At this point there was still no League, but clearly it was in the germination stage.

The Minute extract shown is dated 8th May 1930.

This minute extract, dated 18th November 1930 signals the actual formation of the League, as described to a meeting of the Cherry Grove Bowling Club - clearly founder members.

Text at head of document reads.....

18 November 1930

Formation of the Chester & District Bowling League

Meeting of representatives of representatives (sic) of Bowling Clubs

within a radius of 3 miles, at the City Arms, Frodsham St.

The document goes on to list the prospective founder members as

Hoole, Tower,Police, Hermitage, Buddicum,

Saughall, Bowling Green, Cherry Grove....and others.

It seems that the founders required a minimum membership of 7 Clubs.
