Our photo page - for pictures of historical interest....

These new pictures, courtesy Selwyn Callister a former player and Chairman at St Werbergh's show the after and before for the once magnificent bowling surface at the Centre. This used to be known as the Bowling Green Inn. Selwyn provided some notes indicating that a green has existed on the site since the late 17th century, regular play only being interrupted by WW2 when a temporary school building was erected there.

Did someone mention cultural vandalism?

The redeveloped green at the St Werbergh's Centre, Chester, July 2008

View across the green - well known to those who played here, but not with the luxury flats abutting the green !

As it used to be....with Jim, Ernie, Derrick and Francis

A later picture of the green....

And now to something different.....

This picture was sent to me recently. It is reckoned to have been taken  around 1930.

The man named as Coveney seems to be the link between the lady who owns the picture and the pic itself. She thinks the green was on Hoole Rd, (hence Alex park, one assumes). The alternative could be the Bowling Green pub (later St Werbergs), although the background favours Hoole Rd.

Can anyone take this a bit further ?

Thanks to the contributors so far -

I'm sure many others have interesting pics...please let us share them...
